The City of Blue Island is excited to announce their partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District in a green infrastructure project that will help reduce flooding in Blue Island. This project continues the City of Blue Island’s effort in reducing stormwater run off.
Starting Wednesday, August 19th, there will be an installation of six rain gardens at the following locations:
- Northeast corner of 119th place and Longwood
- Southwest corner of 119th place and Longwood
- Northwest corner of 120th street and Longwood
- Southwest corner of 120th street and Longwood
- Northwest corner of 121st street and Longwood
- Southwest corner of 119th place and Irving
Because this project includes the installation of six rain gardens, there will be temporary road closures. The following roads will be blocked off:
Longwood Drive; 119th Street to 121st Street
Irving Avenue : 119th Place to 120th Street
Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This project will take two months to finish and will have long lasting benefits to the community. The work that will be performed may spark a new awareness in residents and to consider the amazing and helpful tools that many plants and green “structures” can provide – not only are they beautiful in the landscape, but plants can clean the air, store and absorb excess water, provide food for migrating birds and filter out pollutants that might otherwise run off into local waterways.
