WWII Marine Returns Home

Nearly 73 years after he was killed in World War II, the remains of a Marine from Blue Island will finally be returned to his family.

PFC Charles Oetjen, USMC died in November of 1943 in the battle of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands southwest of Hawaii.

He arrived at O’Hare this morning and is on his way to Blue Island, escorted by Blue Island Police and the Patriot Guard. They will come down 127th to Greenwood and then south on Greenwood to Krueger Funeral Home about 10:45 a.m. Mayor Vargas would appreciate anyone who can line Greenwood Ave. tomorrow, to please do so. Bring a flag.

Read more about it from the Southtown, more about the History Flight program, or watch a story on ABC Channel 7.
