35th Anniversary of The History of the Mexican-American Worker Mural

September 15 – October 15 marks our nation’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. In Blue Island, the celebration coincides with the 35th Anniversary of the History of the Mexican-American Worker Mural – a piece of art that played a critical role in our nation’s protection of freedom of expression.

The mural was repainted, with the help of the original artists and the community, during September 2016. In October of that year, the mural was rededicated with a community celebration that paid homage to the original dedication where guests laid their hands upon the mural as it was blessed by local clergy.

You can view the mural on the side of Esparza’s on Broadway and Olde Western. For more about the mural’s incredible history, rebirth, and the people who helped make it happen, please see the resources below.
