The Village of Hazel Crest is calling on residents and supporters to participate in a Yellow Ribbon Memorial on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, in honor of fallen United States Army Specialist Henry Mayfield, Jr. The 23-year-old Mayfield from Hazel Crest was killed in the line of duty earlier this week on Sunday when militants attacked a military base in Kenya.
Tuesday, January 14, 2020 is Henry “Mitch” Mayfield, Jr. Day in Hazel Crest. Village residents and supporters are asked to meet at 11:00am on January 14 at the new village hall, 3601 W. 183rd Street in Hazel Crest, to receive yellow ribbons and instructions on where ribbons will be tied. The goal is to tie yellow ribbons to trees along some of the streets in Hazel Crest in honor of the young soldier.
Specialist Mayfield was a 2014 graduate of Hillcrest High School. In honor of his service and sacrifice, area schools will observe a moment of silence at 11:00am on Tuesday.
“I join the residents of the Village of Hazel Crest in mourning the death of one of our residents, United States Army Specialist Henry Mayfield Jr. As we honor Henry for his service and sacrifice, we offer his family our deepest condolences as they grieve this profound loss. They need to know Henry’s commitment to our safety and security will never be forgotten. The Village of Hazel Crest Veterans Commission is spearheading Tuesday’s Yellow Ribbon Memorial in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice Henry made for the country,” said Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard L. Alsberry, Jr.
