Coronavirus Resources for Seniors

As part of our commitment to keeping our community safe and informed during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve put together some helpful resources tailored specifically for our aging population.

About Coronavirus and Seniors
Older people and people with underlying health conditions appear to be about twice as likely to develop serious outcomes versus otherwise younger, healthier people. Older adults experience a gradual deterioration of their immune system, making it harder for their body to fight off diseases and infection.

Many are also more likely to have underlying conditions that hinder the body’s ability to cope and recover from the illness. People with health conditions like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes need to be especially careful to avoid exposure to COVID-19.

How You Can Protect Yourself and Others
1. Stay at Home. The Governor’s “Stay at Home” Order has been further extended through Thursday, April 30, 2020. This action is incredibly important in our efforts to flatten the curve of this pandemic.

2. Wash Your Hands with Soap for 20 seconds, often, and always before you leave your home and when you return from outside.

3. Disinfect surfaces in your home, especially doorknobs, light switches, and faucets that are frequently touched.

4. The CDC is now recommending that if you do need to leave your home, you need to wear a protective covering over your nose and mouth, to help limit the spread of the virus from asymptomatic carriers.

5. Ask for Help! Now is the time to ask for help from your friends and neighbors. If you need groceries, medicine, or other essential items, and you don’t have any friends or neighbors close by, we’re here to help. We encourage you to reach out to your Aldermen, who can help you connect with local assistance. A full list of City Aldermen can be found at www.blueisland.org.
