West Segment of Cal-Sag Trail completed

Blue Island, IL (January 27, 2021) – The City of Blue Island is pleased to announce that the west segment of the Cal-Sag Trail has been completed and is now open to the public. The west segment of the trail showcases Blue Island’s new Chatham Street bridge which crosses the Cal-Sag canal. This segment of the trail is 1.9 miles long and features an on street and off-street bike path with decorative gateways completing the connection between Alsip and Riverdale.

Mayor Domingo Vargas says, “Going back to Blue Island Going Green (Think BIGG)—the Cal-Sag Trail incorporates our vision for a green infrastructure in the heart of our city and is uniting communities from east to west. The Cal-Sag Trail is a gateway for all of us to get back into nature, especially in these trying times.”

The west segment project was completed in the Fall of 2020 by D. Construction of Coal City, IL. Robinson Engineering, Ltd. assisted the City in securing approximately $300,000 in grant funds from the National Fish and Wildlife Fund to pay for construction and engineering costs.

The Cal-Sag Trail project began in 2009 and took over 10 years to complete. The trail is 26 miles long from Archer Avenue near Lemont to the Burnham Greenway near the Indiana border. The trail connects 14 communities and more than 185,000 people who live within a mile from the trail.
