As a new part of our annual Black History Month Celebration, the City of Blue Island is highlighting the many African-American employees that help make our City great. Meet Benjatoris James, Probationary Police Officer with the Blue Island Police Department.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN BLUE ISLAND? 5 months
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING IN BLUE ISLAND? The community, mainly the events. It’s great seeing everyone come out getting together, love hearing a lot of interesting stories and learning about our communities’ residents.
TELL US ABOUT SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES YOU? Both of my parents. Taught me everything I know today and even if I’m not with someone, I can still support them from the sidelines and their family without being asked. Although they may not be together they always have each others and more importantly each other’s families back. It’s something I strive to find with another person.
WHAT DOES BLACK HISTORY MONTH MEAN FOR YOU? Inspiration. I don’t believe in dwelling in the past, but being inspired by it to do better in the future. Black history month to me celebrates the ancestors who paved the road that’s still being paved, and we’re the ones to pave it.
