Celebrating Women’s History – Employee Spotlight Mitchell Soto-Rodriguez

During the month of March, the City of Blue Island will be celebrating Women’s History Month by featuring the outstanding women who work for or have been elected to serve the City. Meet Mitchell Soto-Rodriguez, part-time Police Officer with the Blue Island Police Department:

How long have you worked for the City of Blue Island?
I just recently got sworn in for the City of Blue Island.

What do you enjoy most about working at the City of Blue Island?
I enjoy helping the families in the community and the diversity the City of Blue Island has. Being bilingual allows me to help those who need help communicating with others when there is a language barrier. Since I graduated High School, I started working at the City of Blue Island and being able to help the community within the different jobs I have had in the past, until now in the City of Blue Island has been my pleasure.

Who is a woman you admired growing up? What did you admire about her?
The woman I admire is my mother, I couldn’t have a better role model than her. She has always taught me to never give up my dreams and always keep pushing myself. She had a rough life when she was younger, but that did not stop her from going to school. She had a full-time job, and she was attending school and sometimes she would not sleep because she needed to do her homework. I have always told myself if my mother did it, I can do it too. She did not have the same opportunities I have, and she was able to manage school and work. That’s why I admire her for that and for many other things as well. She is a very caring woman, who puts her kids first before her and I’ll always thank her for that.

What advice do you have for young women who aspire to do what you do?
I know sometimes life can be hard and I know that for a fact but keep going and don’t stop. Finish High School, attend college, university and get that diploma. Nobody is the owner of your life but you, you are the only one who can stop yourself from not achieving your goals. Be proud of yourself for every little goal you achieve.
