Celebrating Women’s History – 3rd Ward Alderman Nancy Rita

During the month of March, the City of Blue Island is celebrating Women’s History Month by featuring the outstanding women who work for or have been elected to serve the City. Meet Nancy Rita, 3rd Ward Alderman in the City of Blue Island.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR THE CITY OF BLUE ISLAND? I was elected in April 2011. It was a real honor being elected following my mother who was Alderman of the 3rd Ward for many years.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING AT THE CITY OF BLUE ISLAND? I enjoy helping people and being a strong voice for the community where I grew up.

WHO IS A WOMAN YOU ADMIRED GROWING UP? WHAT DID YOU ADMIRE ABOUT HER? Well, I can go in many directions with this question. So, growing up, I admired Cher and Madonna. These women were successful trendsetters, going against the norm, always keeping their individualism. And then there is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who I admire because she successfully fought against gender discrimination. And, of course, my mom. She always helped people, kept it real and loved to laugh.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WHO ASPIRE TO DO WHAT YOU DO? My advice would be to listen to your constituents and do not make promises you cannot keep. Also, stick to your morals and your beliefs even when it may not be the popular thing to do. It isn’t easy to be in the public eye but it is important to have a voice and do what’s right for your community.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SERVE AS A WOMAN IN LEADERSHIP? Being Alderman for the 3rd Ward is rewarding yet challenging and that’s what keeps it interesting. Growing up our parents taught us that the only way to make a change was to get involved and that’s why I continue to work hard and strive to make the East Side the best neighborhood in Bl!
