NATURE OF WORK: The position requires analytical thinking and problem-solving, team-oriented participation, excellent human relations, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills, good public presentation and customer service skills. Knowledge and experience with Word, Excel, is preferred. This position will be supervised by the Supervisor of Buildings.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Building-related codes and ordinances enforced by the City, including the uniform building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes. Codes and ordinances related to disabled and public access. General zoning and land use laws. Major types of building construction, materials and methods. Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.

ABILITY TO: Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials and detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Determine if construction systems conform to City Code requirements. Enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building codes. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

TYPICAL DUTIES, include but are not limited to: Conduct property maintenance inspections, enforces applicable City codes and regulations, issues tickets for code violations and attends housing court as necessary. Enforce the sign code and removes illegally placed signs; and provides general assistance to the public, property owners and tenants in the interpretation and explanation of codes and requirements. Conduct inspections to ensure businesses are properly licensed. Perform residential and apartment inspections. Respond to questions from the public; resolves complaints regarding code compliance and nuisance codes. Review building permit plans prior to inspections and conducts other building inspections as needed. Work on-call and/or weekend hours to respond to emergency inspection needs.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
• High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent
• Two (2) years of property maintenance and construction/inspection experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this position
• International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector and/or Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector.
• Municipal building inspection experience is highly desirable.
