Herman Nickel was a prominent painting contractor at the turn of the 20th century. Note the many fine architectural features he incorporated into his home.
The large window at the center on the second floor, divided into three parts with a larger central arch, is known as a Palladian window. Above it, inside the gable peak, clapboards are arrayed like a fan, a popular Victorian ornamental feature known as a “sunburst.”
An open, full length porch is also typically popular with homes from this period. Notice how the sunburst ornament repeats itself over the shallow gable marking the home’s entrance.
