As a new part of our annual Black History Month Celebration, the City of Blue Island is highlighting the many African-American employees that help make our City great. Meet Devonte Spivey, Patrol Officer with the Blue Island Police Department.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN BLUE ISLAND? 10 Months
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING IN BLUE ISLAND? I enjoy the comradery Blue Island embodies. It’s almost as if there’s a nostalgic love the people have for this city. I’ve observed different walks of life working in this city which conclusively gives me a breath of fresh air.
TELL US ABOUT SOMEONE WHO INSPIRES YOU? Honestly I’m inspired by a multitude of people. It wouldn’t be fair to choose one. I’ve taken small attributes from the many people who inspire me and I use that to become a better me. Overall, I’m inspired by people who believe in hard work, who are ambitious, who know how to dream, and take whatever life throws at them, catch it, and run for the touchdown.
WHAT DOES BLACK HISTORY MONTH MEAN FOR YOU? Black history month celebrates the gargantuan obstacle black Americans had to overcome to be viewed as a human being. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in right now if it wasn’t for the people who fought for equality and freedom. It reminds me to put my best foot forward because opportunity was not reality for black Americans. Black Americans continued to fight, learn, push, and overcome the harsh reality of mental and physical enslavement.
